Sinopsis
“Más grande es el odio que nos ha inspirado, que el mar que nos separa de ella” reza una de las oraciones con mayor fuerza significativa de la Carta de Jamaica de Simón Bolívar. La obra gira en torno a esta frase, referida a España, cuyas palabras aparecen y desaparecen en el transcurso de la secuencia de imágenes, desarticuladas de la cohesión que las junta recién al final del video para formar aquella declaración programática que defiende la independencia. La oración se evidencia de este modo como un nudo simbólico procesal, resultado de una historia compleja y sus posibles articulaciones. Las imágenes del video, en un constante vaivén de un barco en el agua, se abren a las dimensiones de la inmensidad de ese mar que sirve a Bolívar como metaforización de la magnitud del odio que obliga a sublevarse frente a los colonizadores. Es un mar en el que se inscribe, a su vez, una nueva historia, que, así una lectura posible, obliga a pensar en otras colonizaciones y dependencias económicas.

„Der Hass, den es uns einflöst, ist größer als das Meer, das uns von ihm trennt.“, lautet einer der signifikantesten Sentenzen des Briefes aus Jamaika von Simón Bolívar. Das Werk dreht sich um diesen von Bolívar auf Spanien bezogenen Satz, dessen Worte auf desartikulierte Weise in der Bildsequenz auftauchen und verschwinden, ohne die Kohärenz, die sie erst am Ende des Videos erlangen, wo sie sich zu der programmatischen Erklärung, die die Unabhängigkeit verteidigt, zusammenfügen. Der Satzt erweist sich so als symbolischer Knotenpunkt, der als Prozess und Resultat einer komplexen Geschichte und ihrer möglichen Artikulationen entsteht. Die Bilder des Videos, in konstanten Bewegungen wie die eines Schiffes im Wasser, öffnen sich gegenüber der Dimension der Unermesslichkeit diese Meeres, welches Bolívar als Metapher für die Größe des Hasses einsetzt, der die Unterdückten dazu zwingt, sich gegen ihrer Kolonisatoren aufzulehnen. Es ist ein Meer, in das sich eine neue Gescihte einschreibt – so eine mögliche Lektüre des Videos -, die uns dazu führt, an andere Kolonisationsprozesse und ökonomische Abhängigkeiten zu denken.

Synopsis
One of the most significant sentences in Simon Bolivar’s Letter from Jamaica reads - referring to Spain - “greater than the ocean between us, is the hate it has inspired in us”. Aravena Abughosh’ oeuvre is built around this sentence, whose words, in a more or less random way, come and go during a sequence of images until, at the end of the video, they cohere to form that programmatic statement that defines Independence. The sentence shows itself, then, as a kind of symbolic procedural knot; as the result of a complex history and of its possible articulations. The video’s images, wavering constantly like a ship in the water, open themselves to the dimension of vastness of that ocean that Bolivar used as a metaphor of another vastness: that of hate, compelling rebellion against the colonizer. It is an ocean in which, simultaneously, a new history is being inscribed and that — as a possible reading of Aravena Abughosh’ work suggests— forces the viewer to reflect on other colonisation processes and on other economic subordinations.
